I remember loving this story when I read it in high school, but admit that when I picked it up to read again I remembered little. After finishing it now, I am pretty set in the idea that even though I still do love the story, I believe you can probably cut 100 pages of Mr Rochester's rants and Jane Eyre's subtle observations out and still have a very lovely tale. With that being said, I am super excited for the new movie and hope that it lives up to expectations. Thank you Goodreads for pushing the Jane Eyre Challenge on me - I am glad I read it again!
I decided to do the Jane Eyre "challenge" with Lindsay. (Thanks for urging me to do it with you Lindsay!) It is the second time I have read the book also and only only remembered one small part when I took it up this time. It is a great story but I have to admit that it is hard to get through with the old style language. I noticed that while I was reading it I began to think like the book is written - using words that are uncommon today and formulating sentences in my mind that were in the style the story was written. It is sort of funny how our minds work and absorb what we are subjecting it to. A very good reminder to be mindful of what we choose to entertain ourselves with! I enjoyed the book as well. Bronte has a dry sense of humor that makes the read fun. I wish Lindsay and I could see the movie together but geography makes it tough. We will just have to see it on Netflix!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about forming sentences and using vocabulary that are not of today's times. I needed in my classroom (my hands being full) and I asked my friend who was behind me, "Could I commission you to open the door, please?" Commission? What the heck?
